EVALUATION OF BANANA PEEL POWDER AS NATURAL COAGULANT FOR TREATMENT OF WASTEWATER

SOMTO VALENTINE ANYAKORA (NAU/2016224049)

Abstract

This study evaluated Banana peel powder as a natural coagulant for treatmentof wastewater. The demand for fresh water has continued to increase at arapid pace due to the growing population, increasing urbanization and theconstant economic growth. Fresh water scarcity can be overcome to an extentby using fresh water sources for drinking purposes and treated wastewater forvarious domestic purposes. Conventional treatment techniques are extremelyexpensive for developing countries like Nigeria. Therefore, an urgent need forcost effective methods of treatment and recycling of wastewater are highlydesirable. The wastewater was gotten from Juhel Pharmaceuticals and wasused for the laboratory analysis. The Jar test was used to determine theoptimum coagulant dosage of banana peel powder. Banana peels are capableof absorbing various metals and other pollutants present in industrial wastewaters. This project also reports an investigation regarding activation ofbanana peels for this purpose. Banana peels were dried and burned at aspecific heat. This experimental method found Banana peel powder coagulantoptimum dosage to be 0.3mg/L.
