STRUCTURAL ANALYIS AND DESIGN OF A BOX CULVERT ALONG ISUANIOCHA, MGBAKWU ROAD IN AWKA-NORTH LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, ANAMBRA STATE USING BS-8110

Abstract


This project is the analysis design of Box culvert along Isuaniocha/ Mgbakwuroad in Awka North Local Government Area. The sequence of executioncommenced with a site investigation, collection of data and information forthe hydraulic design, which gives the adequate dimension of the culvert. Thehydraulic design was carried out in line with federal highway authority(FHWA) design guidelines. Then, the structural analysis and design wasdone based on the result of the hydraulic design. The culvert was analyzedand designed as a rigid frame under different load combination of dead load,live load, water pressure and literal earth pressure. The method of analysisused was force method for triple and single cell box culvert was designed forboth ultimate limit state and serviceability limit state. The wing walls andheadwalls were designed as cantilever retaining walls. Detailing was doneaccording to BS8110. Having satisfied all necessary checks the proposedculvert is fit for construction and will serve its purpose under the worstcondition.
